About the Role
A Junior Creative is the most important part of the creative department. The type of creative who holds this position is currently in the process of building up their skillset and honing their craft. A good candidate might have experience related to art, design, writing, or film. A can-do attitude is what we look for and try to foster among our junior talent, so they can grow their careers and skills at Monks.
Responsibilities:
A writer has the ability to work with words. That could be showing creativity and cleverness in both short format and longer format copy. It could also be independent work that shows a love of language. A writer also needs to show that they can begin to understand a brand’s voice and learn to adapt it to new projects and mediums. Perfection is not what we seek with a junior creative, but the willingness to try and try again.
An art director should be able to conceptualize, begin to articulate choices, and create comps. A mastery of programs is not necessary, but basic skills related to Photoshop, Illustrator, and Google Slides is a must. An understanding of typography, layout design, and the ability to create moodboards, and pull artist references is also valuable at this level.
Concepts
Junior Creatives will work under the guidance of a Sr. Creative, Associate Creative Director or a Creative Director to develop concepts and directions for creative ideas, campaigns, and executions. This will require them to make conceptual and stylistic choices, including prototypes to illustrate their idea to other members of the team or management. This work can be done in conjunction with teams they’re reporting to or working alongside.
Daily Workload
Junior creatives must have the ability to work on a couple of projects at one time. This includes abiding by timelines, receiving direction, and collaborating - all with a great eye for detail.
Client Presentations & Presentations
Depending on circumstances, Junior creatives may be asked to attend client meetings for experience and observation, other times it will be to present their own concepts. There are no expectations with a Junior Creative to present anything beyond their own work and to appear in a friendly and approachable manner before the client. A Junior’s attendance is more of a learning opportunity, to foster growth through real-life interactions.
Staying Curious
Staying current and up to date on the latest social media “happenings” is important for Junior creatives (whether it's a new platform, a TikTok trend, art, music, film, lit, or thought leadership on media, tech, and creativity). While Juniors are hired for their burgeoning skills, and can-do attitude, at Monks, we also value their POV, and how they can apply their original thoughts and experiences to the ideas we create for our clients.
Skills
Junior Creatives should be sponges for learning. Using the skills they’ve already acquired through life or study, while also constantly adding new skills that can be gained through daily work, mentors, and agency learning opportunities. This position also requires reliable employees who enjoy a challenging and fast-paced work environment.
