Summary

Hitachi America, Ltd. has an opening for a Research Scientist in the Financial Innovation Laboratory (FIL) located in Silicon Valley. FIL is part of a larger R&D center. We work on a variety of problems, many of which involve AI and optimization. Our research is practical, with the goal of addressing customer pain points; however, like academia, we publish as well. IP generation (patents, etc.) is strongly encouraged.

We seek a research scientist to work with a product team to create innovative solutions using machine learning techniques for the financial and insurance industries. The successful candidate will have an opportunity to solve challenging real-world problems, work on large data sets, and build practical solutions. This position would be a perfect match for a visionary scientist who is passionate about the unlimited potential of machine learning/AI/data mining/statistics to create a better human society in an economically viable and environmentally aware fashion.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with a team of engineers and scientists to create solutions using various machine learning techniques, including graph neural networks.

  • Research and develop innovative algorithms and solutions for finance, insurance, and the Internet of Things.

  • Prepare and execute proof-of-concept studies of research solutions.

  • Protect Hitachi’s IP through patents and other activities and publish technical results in leading venues to establish Hitachi as a leader in advanced analytics and AI.

Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Algorithms, Optimization, Quantitative Finance, Operational Research, or a related field will be considered for this role.

  • Strong research experience in data science, artificial intelligence, machine learning, financial mathematics, or an applied field.

  • Good programming skills and knowledge of data science tools and libraries in Python (highly preferred) or similar.

  • Self-motivated and passionate about solving real-world problems and building innovative systems with big data analytics.

  • Working knowledge of graph theory and graph machine learning is desirable.

  • Publications in high-impact, peer-reviewed scientific journals or conferences is desirable.

  • Familiarity with modern AI and agentic AI is a plus.

  • Knowledge of time series analysis techniques is a plus.

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively create and deliver technical communications, including patent applications, presentations, papers, and reports.

  • Ability to collaborate successfully with R&D co-workers.

For California only (as required by California’s Pay Transparency for Pay Equity Act (SB 1162): A good faith estimate of the expected salary for this position in our California office that the employer reasonably expects to pay for the position upon hire is $113,800 - $142,250. Pay is determined based on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, depth of experience in the practice area. Employees are eligible to participate in Hitachi America’s variable pay program, subject to the program’s conditions and restrictions.
