Description -

What a College Intern - Mechatronic Systems & AI Design does at HP:

  • As an Innovation Intern, you’ll be part of a dynamic R&D team pushing the boundaries of mechanical hardware and intelligent systems.
  • To design smarter, more adaptive motion control systems and apply design thinking and AI to solve real-world engineering challenges.
  • Design and optimize motion control systems (motors, transmission drives) with a focus on precision, adaptability, and performance.
  • Apply design thinking methodologies to prototype, test, and refine mechanical and thermal solutions for mechatronic system.
  • Integrate AI-driven analysis to enhance system accuracy, predictive maintenance, and performance tuning.
  • Develop and execute R&D characterization plans for form/fit/function, shock and vibration, reliability, acoustics, and power metrics.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams and external partners to drive innovation and resolve technical challenges.
  • Lead mini-projects and contribute to larger development efforts, representing the mechanical/electrical/thermal team.
  • Perform data analysis on global field data to gain insight for product improvements.

Individuals who do well in this role at HP, usually possess:

  • You’re a curious, hands-on problem solver who’s excited about blending mechanical engineering with intelligent systems.
  • Enrollment in a Bachelor’s or Master’s program in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or related fields.
  • Availability for a 5-6 months full-time internship.
  • Strong foundation in kinematics, servo control, and motion systems.
  • Familiarity with AI concepts (e.g., machine learning, predictive modeling) and how they apply to engineering.
  • Programming skills in Python, MATLAB, C/C++ for simulation, automation, and data analysis.
  • Experience with 3D CAD tools (e.g., Creo) and designing sheet metal/plastic parts.
  • A mindset for design thinking—empathy, ideation, prototyping, and iteration.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to present ideas and negotiate solutions.
