2025 Summer Intern, MS/PhD, Machine Learning Training Infrastructure

Software Engineering builds the brains of Waymo's fully autonomous driving technology. Our software allows the Waymo Driver to perceive the world around it, make the right decision for every situation, and deliver people safely to their destinations. We think deeply and solve complex technical challenges in areas like robotics, perception, decision-making and deep learning, while collaborating with hardware and systems engineers. This internship will be based on-site at our headquarters in Mountain View, CA.

You will:

• Develop the training infrastructure used by model trainers across Waymo.
• Evaluate the impact of these features on developer velocity and resource efficiency.
• Work with model owners to jointly evaluate tradeoffs of training efficiency and model quality.

You have:

• Currently pursuing a MS or PhD degree in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Robotics, or a related technical field.
• Strong understanding of neural network training and related concepts.
• Proficient in Python and deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch, JAX, or TensorFlow.

We prefer:

• Proficient in SQL.
• Familiar with different methods of distributed training for large-scale models, such as data and model parallelism.
• Experienced with software engineering best practices, version control systems, and writing production-quality code.
