Software Engineer (Backend), Square Banking Global Loans

Since we opened our doors in 2009, the world of commerce has evolved immensely, and so has Square. After enabling anyone to take payments and never miss a sale, we saw sellers stymied by disparate, outmoded products and tools that wouldn’t work together.

So we expanded into software and started building integrated, omnichannel solutions – to help sellers sell online, manage inventory, offer buy now, pay later functionality, book appointments, engage loyal buyers, and hire and pay staff. Across it all, we’ve embedded financial services tools at the point of sale, so merchants can access a business loan and manage their cash flow in one place. Afterpay furthers our goal to provide omnichannel tools that unlock meaningful value and growth, enabling sellers to capture the next generation shopper, increase order sizes, and compete at a larger scale.

Today, we are a partner to sellers of all sizes – large, enterprise-scale businesses with complex operations, sellers just starting, as well as merchants who began selling with Square and have grown larger over time. • The Role

  The Square Loans product helps business owners access capital to grow their businesses and manage cash flow. Loans are offered based on a seller’s Square processing history, and repaid automatically as a percentage of daily card sales. Sellers use Loans as a means to access capital, expand their operations, bridge cash flow deficiencies, and grow their business. Square Loans is a mature product addressing ~$5B in financing needs for Square sellers per year. The Global Loans team owns and maintains these lending products, and iterates on them to deliver a seamless experience for Square sellers.

  As a software engineer on the Global Loans team, you’ll implement new seller-facing features for our loans, help us rebuild and rearchitect the services that power them, and expand access to more Square sellers. You will develop financial systems with a focus on scalability and maintainability. To achieve this, you will collaborate with engineering peers, data scientists, and partners with the goal of improving sellers’ ease of access to credit.   Example projects include:

  • Overhaul and rebuild the backend system that manages how we make, market, and monitor loan offers to sellers, improving its scalability and developer experience.

  • Launch a new loan product that considers sellers’ off-Square revenue.

  • Expand access to credit in international markets.

  You Will

  • Support major projects to expand access to credit for our sellers and improve our backend systems.

  • Work with Engineering, Product, and other partners to build software that is clean and well-tested.

  • Oversee the entirety of your features, including component design, implementation, testing, roll-out and maintenance.

  • Partner with web and platform engineers to ship seller-facing features.

  • Work with designers, product managers, data scientists, and other developers to understand our problem space and create elegant solutions.

  • Become an expert in multiple technical areas of the team, and the technologies we use.

  • Build tools and features that refine loan operations for our teams.

  • Collaborate with and learn from senior engineers and tech leaders to grow your technical expertise.

  • Participate in ongoing training to maintain current knowledge of BSA/AML and perform BSA/AML responsibilities by job function.

  You Have

   

  • BS/BA degree or equivalent experience

  • 2+ years of software engineering experience

  • Experience building products end to end with other experienced engineers: creating engineering designs, building the code, writing tests, deploying changes, addressing bugs, and iterating

  • An interest in working with partners across Product, Design, Data Science, Operations among other departments

  • Familiarity with backend technologies such as Kotlin or Ruby on Rails
