Snapshot
Science is at the heart of everything we do at Google DeepMind. We are committed to using AI and machine learning to accelerate scientific discovery and tackle some of humanity's biggest challenges.
The development of fault-tolerant quantum computing represents one of the most profound scientific and computational challenges of our era. In the Science team at GDM, we believe AI can play a critical role in accelerating progress in this field.
This is an opportunity to conduct groundbreaking research at the intersection of quantum computing and artificial intelligence. Our team is focused on leveraging cutting-edge machine learning to push the boundaries of what's possible in quantum simulation and algorithm development. You will join a multidisciplinary team of world-class researchers and engineers to pursue ambitious, long-term research projects that could redefine the future of computation.
About Us
Artificial Intelligence could be one of humanity’s most useful inventions. At Google DeepMind, we’re a team of scientists, engineers, machine learning experts and more, working together to advance the state of the art in artificial intelligence. We use our technologies for widespread public benefit and scientific discovery, and collaborate with others on critical challenges, ensuring safety and ethics are the highest priority.
The Role
As a Research Scientist on our Science Team, you will contribute to our Quantum Computing Initiative. This role is an excellent opportunity for a creative and driven researcher to contribute to the rapidly evolving fields of quantum computing and machine learning for science. You will collaborate with domain experts in areas including mathematics, computational chemistry and materials, (quantum) computer science, machine learning, and with engineers to develop ideas, run experiments, and publish your findings, with the goal of advancing quantum science through the application of artificial intelligence.
Key responsibilities:
- Design and execute research projects, applying modern ML techniques (including generative AI) at the intersection of quantum computing and machine learning.
- Identify, develop and test classical and quantum algorithms with a focus on real-world quantum hardware.
- Report and present research findings clearly and efficiently, both internally and externally, including through high-impact publications.
About You
In order to set you up for success as a Research Scientist at Google DeepMind, we look for the following skills and experience:
- A PhD, or equivalent practical experience, in a relevant field such as quantum algorithms, quantum simulation, quantum error correction, or theoretical physics.
- A research profile that connects machine learning with quantum science or computation.
- A passion for accelerating science with AI.
- Quantitative skills in mathematics, statistics, and/or theoretical physics.
- Strong quantitative component, strong programming/software engineering skills
- A real passion for AI, Science, and QC, and a strongly visible curiosity to explore how AI can accelerate research in QC, and a proven track-record of applying ML/AI to problems in the scientific domain; a curiosity to develop new algorithms and find new applications
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, kindness, teamwork, ability to enable others
In addition, the following would be an advantage:
- Experience with modern deep learning methods, e.g. generative AI.
- Experience with or an interest in automated proof assistants (e.g. Lean).
- A strong publication record in high-impact journals or conferences.
- A strong foundation in computer science, particularly in areas like complexity theory, algorithms, or cryptography.
At Google DeepMind, we value diversity of experience, knowledge, backgrounds and perspectives and harness these qualities to create extraordinary impact. We are committed to equal employment opportunities regardless of sex, race, religion or belief, ethnic or national origin, disability, age, citizenship, marital, domestic or civil partnership status, sexual orientation, gender identity, pregnancy, or related condition (including breastfeeding) or any other basis as protected by applicable law.
