Summary
Hitachi America, Ltd. (http://www.hitachi-america.us/) has openings for a Research Engineer in the Financial Innovation Laboratory (FIL) located in Silicon Valley. FIL is part of a bigger research center. We work on a variety of research problems on the leading edge of innovation in Fintech and Insuretech. Our research is practical, with the goal of addressing customer pain points; however, like academia we do publish as well. IP generation (patents etc.) are highly encouraged.
We are seeking a research engineer to support the creation and implementation of innovative solutions for the financial and insurance industries. The successful candidate will have an opportunity to solve challenging real-world problems, work on large data sets and to build practical solutions. This position is a perfect match for a skilled engineer who is passionate about the unlimited potential of machine learning/AI/data mining/statistics for creating a better human society in an economically viable and environmentally conscious way. Knowledge of the finance and insurance domain is a plus, but lack of such knowledge is not a deal breaker.

Responsibilities:
Engineer and develop innovative algorithms and solutions for finance, insurance, and the Internet of Things
Prepare and execute proof-of-concepts of the solutions with customers
Work with business units to commercialize the successful proof-of-concepts
Protect Hitachi’s IP through patents and other activities and publish technical results in leading venues to establish Hitachi as a leader in advanced analytics and AI
Qualifications:
Master’s degree in software engineering
1-3 years of industry experience
Full-stack development experience in data science, AI, or an applied field. Some experience with databases and analytics is desired
Ability to independently solve complex problems that require extensive investigation and analysis
Good programming skills and knowledge of data science tools and libraries in Python or R or MATLAB - Knowledge of big data platforms and cloud computing is a plus
Self-motivated and passionate about solving real-world problems and building innovative systems with big data analytics
Demonstrated ability to effectively create and deliver technical communications which may include patent applications, presentations, papers, and reports
Ability to collaborate successfully with R&D co-workers, Hitachi group company customers, partners, engineers, and business units in Hitachi with the goal of commercializing the proposed solution
Ability to influence others to accept practices and approaches, and ability to communicate and influence executive leadership
For California only (as required by California’s Pay Transparency for Pay Equity Act (SB 1162): A good faith estimate of the expected salary for this position in our California office upon hire is $113,800 - $142,250. Pay is determined based on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, depth of experience in the practice area. Employees are eligible to participate in Hitachi America’s variable pay program, subject to the program’s conditions and restrictions.
