Mapping & Localization, Software Engineering Intern
Job Description
Who We Are
Nuro is a self-driving technology company on a mission to make autonomy accessible to all. Founded in 2016, Nuro is building the world’s most scalable driver, combining cutting-edge AI with automotive-grade hardware. Nuro licenses its core technology, the Nuro Driver™, to support a wide range of applications, from robotaxis and commercial fleets to personally owned vehicles. With technology proven over years of self-driving deployments, Nuro gives the automakers and mobility platforms a clear path to AVs at commercial scale—empowering a safer, richer, and more connected future.
About the Role
As a software engineering intern, you will work closely with leading experts in the field of machine learning, robotics, and software. Depending on your skill sets and areas of interest, you will work on some or all of the following: Sensor Data & Calibration, Pose, Mapping, Localization, Online Map, Map ML Platform, Routing.
About the Work
Depending on your skill set and areas of interest you will work on some or all of the following:
- Sensor Data & Calibration: The Sensor Data & Calibration team ensures all sensors on our vehicles (camera, LIDAR, radar) provide high quality and reliable data suitable for localization and perception across our mixed fleet of platforms. In addition, this team develops cutting-edge learning based approaches to simulate sensor data for current and future target vehicles. Projects include online calibration (camera-LIDAR, camera radar) as well as learned sensor simulation for training and evaluating multimodal perception.
- Localization & Mapping: The Localization & Mapping team ensures our vehicles have accurate and up-to-date maps of their environments, generated from multiple data sources including first-party HD maps. In addition, this team is responsible for learned online localization using a range of different sensor modalities (camera, LIDAR, radar). Projects include learned matching for accelerated mapping and offline geospatial models for generating semantic maps.
- Map ML Platform: The Map ML Platform team is the accelerator to our ML-first mapping strategy. This team provides solutions to empower machine learning development in L&M and optimize on-cloud training and onboard inference, along with large-scale map data management, testing and deployment processes. Projects include vast-scale unstructured data mining for improved map understanding and efficient operational map maintenance tooling.
- Online Map: The Online Map team is responsible for onboard map perception to enable autonomy at vast geographic scale. This team builds cutting-edge ML models to combine onboard perception data with a range of map priors, in order to deliver contextual information about roads and intersections to our vehicles in real-time and handle construction and other changes that limit traditional HD map approaches. Projects include open vocabulary learning for road taxonomy, map label management and auto-evaluation, transformer model architecture design and optimization
About You
You have deep expertise and prior experience in some or many of the following areas:
- You are a current BS or MS candidate in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Robotics, or a related field graduating in or before December 2026
- You have experience in one or more of the following areas: computer vision; machine learning; robotics; large-scale distributed systems; data storage and processing systems; advanced algorithms using C++ and Python; robotics software frameworks.
- You have strong problem solving and programming skills.
For this position, the reasonably expected pay is around $11,500 per month. Your actual base pay will depend on several factors, including your experience, qualifications, education, location, and skills.
