About the role

We are seeking a whip-smart, creative Head of Privacy & Product-Legal to join our team! Reporting directly to the General Counsel, you will partner closely with our ML, Product Eng, and Product Teams to ensure our products are built in a safe and compliant way. You will develop efficient product counseling cadences, develop an enhanced privacy-by-design approach, and ensure that Character.AI hits its marks as we expand our AI product suite against a landscape of emerging regulations. You will issue-spot risk and think around corners to help the General Counsel and Leadership team solve problems before they arise. You will have a seat at the table in the most dynamic product legal field of the decade.  Among the critical tasks you’ll take on:

  • Operationalize product reviews and ensure that, by design, our products and features undergo appropriate review prior to shipping.

  • Ensure compliance with privacy regulations globally.

  • Ensure compliance with emerging AI regulations and best practices globally.

  • Partner with Trust & Safety to understand platform risks and build mitigations directly into the product.

  • Dive deep with our ML team to counsel on safety best practices in our AI products and features.

  • Build out compliance mechanisms to ensure appropriate handling of IP.

  • Advise the General Counsel, Leadership Team, and Board of Directors on privacy & product risks and emerging best practices.

Requirements:

  • At least eight years of experience with product counseling, including advising on data privacy issues, building & managing privacy programs, and establishing practices to maintain compliance.

  • In-house experience with the above issues at a B2C consumer tech company.

  • Strong substantive understanding of mobile applications and strong substantive knowledge of privacy law and key legal regimes around digital content.

  • Strong risk tolerance and experienced perspective on building, improving, and maintaining a privacy program.

  • Experience in conducting Data Protection Impact Assessments and building out GDPR compliance frameworks.

  • Ability to work well under pressure with minimal supervision and provide practical advice to stakeholders.

  • Detail-oriented with executive maturity, great communications skills, and the ability to influence and communicate within all levels of the organization.

  • A willingness to tackle new challenges and new responsibilities as the company grows.

  • A passion for keeping users safe.

You will be a good fit if:

  • You are able to deeply understand the Eng and Product perspective and communicate your advice in a balanced and collaborative way.

  • You are willing to build processes and controls from scratch.

  • You are passionate about emerging regulation and willing to go deep to understand its implications and build novel controls before they become commoditized.

  • You have a passion for creating innovative AI experiences, and you’re enthusiastic to lay the groundwork for our product teams to harness the power of AI.
